How often do you think about going to the gym or to the studio, but instead decide that wrapping yourself in a blanket on your couch in front of the fireplace is a “better” idea? I know I do it often!

These cold months filled with holidays and shopping and unpredictable weather make it challenging to prioritize your health and well-being after a successful summer and fall. We have few tips and tricks to help you stay at the top of your game through the new year.

Plan your workouts for the week

Grab a planner from Target (as if any of us need more of a reason to go to Target) or use your calendar to designate time for your workouts. During such a busy time with wonky work and school schedules, planning for the full month at one time is nearly impossible. Planning week by week is much more reasonable and less of guessing game.

Create a workout playlist

If there’s a day when I don’t feel like working out, sometimes all I need to do is listen to my workout playlist. It shifts my mindset from “Eh I don’t want to do anything,” to “Let’s get to work!” I’m sure there are some Christmas remixes out there somewhere…if that’s your cup of tea.

Bring a friend

It’s not only fun to workout with a partner–it’s helpful for accountability, too! There are inevitably going to be days when neither of you feel like doing anything. However, if just one of you is motivated, all it takes is a quick phone call to say, “Hey I’m coming to pick you up!” Then you, like, have to go (especially if their car is already warm)!

Switch it up

Monotony is boring. Choose different classes, switch up your lifting/cardio routines, and even switch up your meals to keep it interesting! These cold, gray days need some extra spice, anyway.

Set aside some “Me” time

Just as important as your workouts is your “me” time. If you’re unable to carve out extra time, take a few minutes before or after your workout to silent your mind. Don’t worry about the gifts you need to buy, the food you need to prepare, or anything else. Make the decision to treat yourself well rather than self-sabotage (with all of the extra cookies and treats).

Remember why you practice

Your health is of the utmost importance. Tune in to how you’re feeling mentally, physically, and energetically.

Don’t punish yourself

Enjoy the holidays! Drink that glass of wine. Eat the cookie. Don’t feel like you have to avoid all of the joys the holidays can bring. Staying present while eating and drinking will help to control your urges. The more you punish yourself, the harder it will be to make it through the season without feeling guilty. Even if you miss a workout, it’s not the end of the world. Just be sure to get back on track as quickly as you can!
